Renovation ROI: Estimating the Financial Return on Renovation
Renovation ROI compares estimated value added with project cost. It separates a potential resale benefit from the amount spent on the work.
Use the Renovation ROI Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Renovation ROI formula
ROI = (Estimated value added − Renovation cost) ÷ Renovation cost × 100
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Estimated value added | 30000 USD |
| Renovation cost | 20000 USD |
| Renovation ROI | 50% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Value added is uncertain and is not the same as contractor cost. Include overruns and consider enjoyment or maintenance benefits separately.
