Housing-cost ratio: Looking Beyond Rent in a Housing Ratio
Housing costs can include more than rent or mortgage principal and interest. Define the recurring costs you want to include, then divide by gross monthly income consistently.
Use the Housing-cost ratio Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Housing-cost ratio formula
Housing ratio (%) = Monthly housing costs ÷ Gross monthly income × 100
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Monthly housing costs | 1500 USD |
| Gross monthly income | 5000 USD |
| Housing-cost ratio | 30% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
A ratio is a comparison measure, not a universal approval threshold. Childcare, other debts and take-home pay still affect affordability.
