Auto Loan: Handling Trade-In Debt in an Auto Loan Estimate
The trade-in value is not all available toward the next car if an old loan remains. Use net trade-in equity after paying off that loan, then separate the down payment from the dealer's fees and taxes.
Use the Auto Loan Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Auto Loan formula
Financed amount = price + tax on full price + fees − down payment − net trade-in equity. Monthly payments use the fixed-rate loan formula. Net trade-in equity means vehicle value after any outstanding trade-in loan is repaid.
Worked example
A $20,000 car with a $5,000 down payment and no taxes, fees, or interest costs $250 per month over five years.
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Tax treatment of trade-ins varies. This tool taxes the full purchase price, so adapt the inputs carefully when comparing a local dealer quote.
