Emergency Fund: Choosing Emergency Coverage for Your Own Bills
List the expenses that would continue if income stopped: essential housing, utilities, food and required payments. Use that total to compare different coverage periods rather than applying a multiple to gross salary.
Use the Emergency Fund Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Emergency Fund formula
Target = monthly essential expenses × months of coverage. The funding gap is max(0, target − existing reserve). Months to close the gap are rounded up from gap divided by the monthly saving amount.
Worked example
At $2,000 essential expenses, three months of coverage means $6,000. With $2,000 saved and $500 monthly saving, the gap takes eight months.
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
A larger target takes longer to fund. Keep a smaller first milestone so the plan remains measurable while you build the full reserve.
