Purchase affordability: Checking a Purchase After Reserving Obligations
Available funds are not necessarily available to spend. Subtract money already committed to upcoming bills before deciding whether a purchase fits the current cash position.
Use the Purchase affordability Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Purchase affordability formula
Available purchase cash = Available funds − Reserved obligations
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Available funds | 5000 USD |
| Reserved obligations | 3000 USD |
| Purchase affordability | 2,000 USD |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Keep emergency reserves separate from purchase cash. The calculation does not assess future installments or the ongoing cost of ownership.
