Monthly budget balance: Finding the Gap Between Income and Spending
A positive monthly balance identifies money not yet assigned to expenses. Decide whether it should fund savings, irregular bills or debt repayment before treating the entire surplus as spending money.
Use the Monthly budget balance Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Monthly budget balance formula
Balance = Monthly income − Monthly expenses
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Monthly income | 5000 USD |
| Monthly expenses | 3500 USD |
| Monthly budget balance | 1,500 USD |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Use income and expenses for the same month. Annual bills can make a single month look unusually strong or weak.
