Budget category share: Seeing Which Category Uses Your Spending
Category share shows how much of total spending belongs to one category. It helps identify concentration without claiming that any particular percentage is right for every household.
Use the Budget category share Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Budget category share formula
Category share (%) = Category spending ÷ Total spending × 100
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Category spending | 500 USD |
| Total spending | 2500 USD |
| Budget category share | 20% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Use total spending as the denominator. Dividing by income answers a different question, and overlapping categories can make shares add to more than 100%.
