Effective tax rate: Separating Effective Tax Rate from Marginal Rate
Effective tax rate divides total tax by the income measure selected. It describes the overall tax share rather than the rate on the next unit of taxable income.
Use the Effective tax rate Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Effective tax rate formula
Effective rate = Total tax ÷ Total income × 100
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Total tax | 10000 USD |
| Total income | 50000 USD |
| Effective tax rate | 20% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
State whether the denominator is gross or taxable income. Different definitions can produce different effective rates from the same tax bill.
