Average order value: Tracking Average Revenue per Order
Average order value divides sales revenue by the number of orders. It can reveal changes in basket size or product mix over time.
Use the Average order value Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Average order value formula
AOV = Total sales revenue ÷ Number of orders
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Sales revenue | 10000 USD |
| Number of orders | 100 orders |
| Average order value | 100 USD |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
State whether returns, discounts and taxes are excluded. A higher order value does not necessarily mean higher profit per order.
