Salary: Accounting for Unpaid Weeks in Salary Comparisons
Two jobs with the same hourly rate can produce different annual pay if paid weeks or hours differ. Enter the schedule you expect to be paid for, including the effect of unpaid breaks.
Use the Salary Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Salary formula
Annual gross pay = hourly pay × paid hours per week × paid weeks per year. Average monthly pay is annual pay divided by 12. Biweekly equivalent is annual pay divided by 26. Actual pay periods and unpaid leave may differ.
Worked example
At $25 per hour, 40 hours per week, and 52 paid weeks, annual gross pay is $52,000; the monthly average is $4,333.33.
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
The monthly number is an annual average. It is not necessarily the amount on a particular payslip, and it does not deduct tax.
