Real return: Checking Returns After Inflation
A nominal gain does not measure the full change in purchasing power. The real-return formula compares the investment growth factor with the inflation growth factor.
Use the Real return Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Real return formula
Real return = (1 + nominal return) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Nominal return | 8 % |
| Inflation | 3 % |
| Real return | 4.854369% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Use matching periods for both rates. Subtracting inflation from return is an approximation rather than the exact calculation used here.
