Portfolio weight: Measuring One Holding’s Share of a Portfolio
Portfolio weight expresses a holding relative to the entire portfolio's value. Recalculate after prices move because a holding can become more dominant without any new purchase.
Use the Portfolio weight Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Portfolio weight formula
Weight_i = Asset value_i ÷ Total portfolio value
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Asset value | 20000 USD |
| Portfolio value | 100000 USD |
| Portfolio weight | 20% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Value all holdings at a consistent date and convert currencies consistently. Include the cash position if it is part of the portfolio definition.
