Payroll ratio: Seeing How Much Revenue Payroll Uses
The payroll ratio relates payroll cost to revenue. It is useful for tracking a business's cost structure as sales and staffing change.
Use the Payroll ratio Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Payroll ratio formula
Payroll ratio = Payroll cost ÷ Revenue × 100
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Payroll cost | 30000 USD |
| Revenue | 100000 USD |
| Payroll ratio | 30% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Choose whether employer taxes and benefits are included and stay consistent. Low payroll share is not automatically evidence of adequate staffing.
