Expense-to-income ratio: Checking Expenses Against Gross Income
The expense-to-income ratio expresses spending relative to gross monthly earnings. It is useful for a consistent snapshot, but gross income includes amounts that may never reach your bank account.
Use the Expense-to-income ratio Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Expense-to-income ratio formula
Expense ratio (%) = Expenses ÷ Gross monthly income × 100
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Expenses | 3500 USD |
| Gross monthly income | 5000 USD |
| Expense-to-income ratio | 70% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Build a separate take-home cash budget before deciding what you can spend. A low ratio alone does not establish affordability.
