Expense growth: Measuring How Fast an Expense Has Grown
Comparing the same expense across two periods can reveal a price increase or a change in consumption. The percentage is relative to the earlier amount, not the current bill.
Use the Expense growth Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Expense growth formula
Growth (%) = (Current expense − Previous expense) ÷ Previous expense × 100
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Current expense | 1100 USD |
| Previous expense | 1000 USD |
| Expense growth | 10% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Compare like-for-like periods and quantities. A higher utility bill caused by more usage is not solely evidence of higher prices.
