Budget variance: Reading a Budget Variance with the Right Sign
Actual spending above the budget produces a positive variance in this tool. That positive number means overspending, which is easy to confuse with a favorable result.
Use the Budget variance Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Budget variance formula
Variance = Actual spending − Budgeted spending; Variance (%) = (Actual − Budget) / Budget × 100.
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Actual spending | 1100 USD |
| Budgeted spending | 1000 USD |
| Budget variance | 100 USD |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Check the absolute difference and percentage together. A small category can show a large percentage change from a modest cash difference.
