Break-even units: Finding the Unit Volume Needed to Break Even
Break-even units spread fixed costs across the contribution earned on each sale. If contribution per unit falls, more sales are needed to cover the same fixed cost.
Use the Break-even units Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Break-even units formula
Units = Fixed costs ÷ (Price per unit − Variable cost per unit)
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Fixed costs | 10000 USD |
| Price per unit | 50 USD |
| Variable cost per unit | 30 USD |
| Break-even units | 500 |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Round up when only whole units can be sold. The model assumes constant price, unit variable cost and fixed costs within the relevant range.
