Payroll withholding estimate: Spreading a Custom Annual Tax Estimate Across Pay Periods
This withholding estimate divides a simplified annual bracket-tax calculation, after entered credits, across the pay periods. It can help explain the arithmetic behind a budget scenario.
Use the Payroll withholding estimate Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Payroll withholding estimate formula
Withholding per period = max(0, custom annual bracket tax − annual credits) / pay periods.
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Annual taxable pay after permitted adjustments | 60000 USD |
| Upper annual bracket limits | 10000,40000,1000000 |
| Annual marginal rates (%) | 0,10,20 |
| Annual tax credits | 1000 USD |
| Pay periods per year | 12 periods |
| Payroll withholding estimate | 500 USD |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
It does not implement official payroll tables, cumulative withholding or irregular-pay rules. Compare an actual payroll estimate with the appropriate official system.
