Current bond yield: Separating Current Bond Yield from Total Return
Current yield divides annual coupon income by today's market price. It describes an income relationship without accounting for the price movement toward redemption value.
Use the Current bond yield Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Current bond yield formula
Current yield = Annual coupon ÷ Market price
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Annual coupon | 50 USD |
| Market price | 950 USD |
| Current bond yield | 5.263158% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Do not substitute it for yield to maturity. Default risk, reinvestment assumptions and selling price can change realized results.
