Dividend payout ratio: Checking How Much Profit Is Distributed
The dividend payout ratio compares dividends with net income for the same period. It describes distribution relative to earnings rather than the investment return received by shareholders.
Use the Dividend payout ratio Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Dividend payout ratio formula
Payout ratio = Dividends ÷ Net income
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Dividends | 20000 USD |
| Net income | 100000 USD |
| Dividend payout ratio | 20% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Negative or unusually low earnings can make the ratio difficult to interpret. Cash resources and future payment commitments need separate review.
