Weighted average debt rate: Combining Debt Rates with Balance Weights
A weighted average rate gives larger debts more influence than small balances. It summarizes a debt mix more usefully than adding the rates and dividing by the number of accounts.
Use the Weighted average debt rate Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Weighted average debt rate formula
Weighted rate = Σ(balance_i×rate_i) ÷ Σ(balance_i)
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Debt balances | 1000,2000 |
| Annual rates | 10,5 |
| Weighted average debt rate | 6.666667% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
It does not select a repayment strategy or include fees automatically. The highest-rate debt may still matter most for marginal interest savings.
