Debt-to-assets ratio: Seeing How Much of an Asset Base Is Financed by Debt
The debt-to-assets ratio relates liabilities to assets on the same date. It can help compare the balance-sheet position across periods without confusing debt with the monthly payment burden.
Use the Debt-to-assets ratio Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Debt-to-assets ratio formula
Debt ratio = Total liabilities ÷ Total assets
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Total liabilities | 40000 USD |
| Total assets | 100000 USD |
| Debt-to-assets ratio | 40% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Asset valuation changes can move the ratio even without new borrowing. Compare consistent accounting definitions.
