Savings rate: Measuring the Share of Income You Keep
A savings rate measures the gap between income and expenses relative to income. Track it consistently over time to see whether a pay rise is becoming savings or being absorbed by spending.
Use the Savings rate Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Savings rate formula
Savings rate (%) = (Income − Expenses) ÷ Income × 100
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Income | 5000 USD |
| Expenses | 3500 USD |
| Savings rate | 30% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
This is a household savings proportion, not a bank interest rate. State whether the income figure is gross or take-home pay before comparing results.
