Return on margin: Separating Return on Margin from Return on Exposure
Return on margin divides trading profit or loss by the initial margin amount. The small denominator can make the percentage look large.
Use the Return on margin Calculator to enter your own figures and compare the result with the worked example below.
Return on margin formula
ROM (%) = Trading P/L ÷ Initial margin × 100
Worked example
| Item | Example value |
|---|---|
| Trading profit or loss | 200 USD |
| Initial margin | 1000 USD |
| Return on margin | 20% |
These are illustrative inputs, not current prices, rates or recommended targets. Where a currency is shown, keep all comparable money amounts in the same currency; conversion examples identify the two sides separately.
How to interpret the result
Compare it with notional exposure and drawdown. A high margin return is not evidence that leverage reduced risk.
