How this calculation works

Target = monthly essential expenses × months of coverage.

The funding gap is max(0, target − existing reserve). Months to close the gap are rounded up from gap divided by the monthly saving amount.

A worked example

At $2,000 essential expenses, three months of coverage means $6,000. With $2,000 saved and $500 monthly saving, the gap takes eight months.

Assumptions and limitations

Choose coverage for your own circumstances. No interest, inflation, income loss timing, or investment returns. This does not prescribe a suitable reserve for an individual.
